Cross-Listing Oversell Risk Calculator

Reviewed for 2026, updated September 8, 2026.

Estimates how many double sales per month your delisting lag is likely to cause, and what they cost, for resellers who cross-list the same items on several marketplaces.

Your estimate

Expected oversells per month...
Share of sales that turn into an oversell...
Monthly cost of oversells...
Annual cost at this delisting lag...

Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

Every item you cross-list is live in several places at once. When it sells on one marketplace, the other copies stay for sale until you take them down, and any buyer who checks out during that window has bought something you no longer have. Most resellers know oversells happen. Very few have a number for how often, which makes it hard to decide whether faster delisting is worth paying for or worth reorganizing your day around.

This calculator treats each sale as a race between you and the next buyer. It works out how often an average listing sells per hour, scales that up because the items that sell tend to be your most wanted ones, keeps only the demand coming from the other marketplaces, and applies it to the hours a sold item stays live elsewhere. The result is an expected count, not a prediction of any given week. If your sales cluster around price drops or weekend traffic, the real number will run higher than this average model shows.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter how many items are live on more than one marketplace and how many sales you closed last month across all of them.
  2. Set the number of marketplaces per item and be honest about how long a sold item usually stays live elsewhere. Cleaning up once a day means roughly 12 hours on average.
  3. Read the expected oversells and their cost, then lower the lag to a few minutes to see what near real time delisting would change for your numbers.

What the math assumes

  • Assumes sales are spread evenly across the marketplaces an item is listed on, so the share of demand coming from the other platforms is (marketplaces minus 1) divided by marketplaces.
  • Assumes a 30 day month with sales possible at any hour, so an average listing's hourly sale chance is its monthly sale rate divided by 720.
  • Assumes items that just sold are more in demand than the average listing by the demand multiplier you enter (5x by default). Set it to 1 to ignore this effect.
  • Uses an exponential survival formula: risk per sale equals 1 minus e to the power of (negative hourly hazard times lag hours), so the risk never exceeds 100% however long the lag.
  • The cost per oversell is whatever you enter. The tool does not know your marketplace's cancellation policy or how a defect affects your account standing.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator show so few oversells for my store?

For a small store with a long tail of slow moving items, most listings genuinely do not sell twice inside a 12 hour window. The count grows quickly with sales volume, longer lag, and hotter inventory. Raise the demand multiplier if the items you sell are mostly fast movers.

Does a near zero result mean I do not need to delist quickly?

No. The output is an average expectation. One oversell on a high value item can cost more than a year of the small numbers shown here, and marketplace defect rates count every cancellation regardless of how rare they are.

How should I estimate the cost of one oversell?

Add the time to message the buyer and cancel, any label or fee you cannot recover, and a value for the rating or metric hit. Use your own history if you have it; the default is only a starting point.
