Which vacation mode settings should a reseller use across marketplaces when taking a week off?

Every marketplace handles time away differently: some hide listings, some extend handling time, some do nothing. Here is how to set each one so you come back to sales, not cancellations.

What the different time-away features actually do

Marketplaces handle a seller's absence in a handful of ways, and the label on the setting rarely tells you which. Some hide your listings entirely so nothing can sell. Some keep listings visible but extend the promised handling time or show buyers a notice. Some keep everything visible and only pause automated offers or messages, which does not protect you at all against a sale you cannot ship. And some have no feature, leaving you to raise your handling time manually or end listings by hand. Before the trip, check which of these each of your platforms actually provides. Each option has a cost. Hidden listings lose search position on platforms that reward recent activity, and it can take a while after your return for them to recover. Visible listings with extended handling can still sell, which is good, but a portion of buyers never read the handling time and will message on day two asking where their package is. Doing nothing risks late-shipment marks and cancellations, which are the metrics most likely to affect your standing. The right choice is a trade between momentum and risk, and it depends on how long you will be away. Related: How do you sell bundles and lots when each piece is also listed separately elsewhere?

Choosing settings based on trip length and who can ship

For a trip of a few days, you often need no special mode at all. Ship everything sold before you leave, set your handling time to the longest window you can honestly meet, and let listings stay live. For a week to ten days, use extended handling on platforms that honor it and hide listings on platforms that would count slow shipping against you regardless of a notice. For anything longer, hide everything unless you have arranged for someone else to ship, because buyer patience and platform tolerance both run out well before a month.

If a partner or helper will ship while you are away, restrict what is live to items they can find and pack without judgment calls. Pre-pack the likely sellers, label the bins clearly, print a short instruction sheet with the packing station layout and how to print labels, and make sure they can see incoming sales without needing your phone. It is often better to leave fewer listings live and have every one of them ship cleanly than to leave the whole catalog up and hope.

The pre-trip checklist across every platform

Work through the platforms one by one. Ship every open order and confirm tracking has updated. Answer open messages and either accept or decline pending offers, since an offer picked up by an auto-accept rule while you are on a plane becomes an order you cannot ship. Turn off any automated offers to watchers, scheduled promotions, or sales events that would generate purchases. Then set the time-away mode on each platform and take a screenshot of the settings screen so you can restore exactly the same handling time later.

Check your sync tool last. If you hide listings on one platform and keep them live on another, make sure the tool does not interpret the hidden listings as ended and try to restore them, and confirm that a sale on a live platform will still delist the hidden copies when you return. Set a calendar reminder for the day before you get back so you can switch things on from wherever you are, and a second one for the morning after to verify everything actually came back. Coming back without a pile of late shipments

Reactivate in order of strictness. Start with the platforms that measure shipping speed most tightly, so any sale that arrives lands inside a window you can meet, then bring the rest back over the following day. Restore the handling time you recorded in the screenshots. Then verify that your sync tool has re-enabled every listing it was supposed to and that quantities match your records, since a pause and resume is exactly when a mismatch can slip in.

Expect a quiet few days on platforms where hidden listings lost position. Refresh a handful of listings with new photos, an edited title, or a relist to regain visibility rather than dropping prices across the board out of impatience. The lull is a visibility problem, not a pricing problem, and treating it with discounts costs margin you will not get back. Related: Faster Relisting Across Platforms

Key takeaways
  • Learn which of your platforms hides listings, extends handling time, or does nothing before deciding on a setting.
  • For short trips, extend handling and ship everything first; for a week or more, hide listings where slow shipping is penalized.
  • Pause automated offers and promotions, settle pending offers, and screenshot every setting before you leave.
  • Reactivate strict-shipping platforms first, verify sync re-enabled everything, and rebuild visibility without reflexive discounts.
